Situated on Russell Lane, the new Music Center will become a vital part of the campus Arts District, conforming to a "neighborhood plan" that unifies buildings through connections to public spaces and walkway, and architecture featuring approriate proportions and design details.

LMN Architects is based in Seattle and since 1979 has designed more than 40 arts buildings including 16 concert halls and music performance halls. www.lmnarchitects.com

Cyril Harris is a legend of both concert hall design and theories of acoustics and sound. Acoustical Designing in Architecture, co-authored by Harris and V.O. Knudsen, is considered a Bible of acoustic design.

On May 25th, U.C. San Diego announced that Point Loma developer Conrad Prebys has contributed $6 million to the Music Center, which will be named for him.

UCSD's new Music Center, designed by world-renowned acoustician Dr. Cyril Harris and LMN Architects of Seattle, will feature a 400-seat concert hall that will be one of the finest of its size in the world. The design team is utilitizing several ideas from the earlier music-related projects including Seattle's acclaimed Benaroya Hall. The concert hall's interior uses angular wall and ceiling shapes to diffuse sound evenly through the space. Built of cast-in-place concrete and aluminum/glass curtain wall, the Music Center will also include a small, flexible hall for multimedia and music theatre works, a 150-seat lecture/recital hall, and rehearsal rooms for chamber, choral, orchestral, and percussion music.

The building will feature the newest technologies in student recording suites, computer music labs, practice rooms, and offices. Many interior spaces will have views of landscaped courtyards and outdoor areas. When it opens in 2009, the Music Center will present a range of concerts from classical music to innovative new works incorporating cutting-edge technologies. It will also be an education center, as budding musicians from San Diego schools will visit to attend concerts, clinics, and classes.
