Date: Saturday, October 11th, 2008
Time: 6:00 pm
Description: Sanctuary was composed by UCSD Pulitzer Prize-winner Roger Reynolds for percussion and computer processing. Percussionist Steven Schick performs with sensors on his fingertips that send signals to a laptop computer, and his live performance is mixed with processed sound. Sanctuary premiered to great reviews last fall at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. For sheer magic, you can't beat the venue for the piece's West Coast debut: the courtyard of famed architect Louis Kahn's Salk Institute--at sunset. Cost: $25 general/$23 UCSD faculty&staff/$10 for UCSD students.

Description: Last summer Fabio Oliveira became a star as a member of UCSD percussion ensemble during its visit to Taiwan, where fans lined up dozens deep requesting autographs from the stickmen. Oliveira is a seasoned percussionist who is also fun to watch: he uses body language to expand his musical performances into performance art. Before his concert last spring, word was he would be wearing 'The Emperor's New Clothes'. That performance was cancelled, and there's no telling what he'll pull out of his drum bag for this one.
