Undergraduate Admissions

The Department of Music does not require an audition to enter as a Music Major since we have non-performance based majors. Those students who know that they want to do an emphasis in performance are strongly encouraged to contact the faculty member for their instrument.

Recommendations for Transfer Students
If you plan to transfer to UCSD, we recommend that you contact the UCSD Admissions Office (858) 534-3160 or (858) 534-4831 to arrange for a preliminary evaluation of your transfer credits. Following this contact you may then arrange for an appointment with the Music Department undergraduate advisor, (858) 534-8226, to determine which acceptable transfer credits can be applied to the major. Bring college transcripts, college catalogs, and course syllabi at the time of your appointments.

Please Note: All transfer students wishing to place out of Basic Musicianship (Music 2A-B-C), Basic Keyboard (Music 2AK-BK-CK), or Music Theory (Music 101A-B-C or 102A-B-C) must take proficiency tests with the instructors of the courses in the fall quarter of entrance to UCSD. Please attend the first class meeting of each course for proficiency exam announcements by the instructors.

ICAM Transfer Students
The pre-major for ICAM was discontinued in Fall 2007, which means all students entering in or after Fall 2007 will be admitted as ICAM majors.

Transfers entering with 36 or more quarter units should complete their lower division courses for the major by their third quarter of study at UCSD. At the time of admission, transfer students’ transcripts will be evaluated by the departments to determine what courses completed elsewhere, if any, may be petitioned as equivalent to required lower division courses. Students should be prepared to provide course descriptions, syllabi, and other materials that may be required to determine the content of the courses taken at other institutions.
