Winners of the 2007 La Jolla Symphony & Chorus Young Artists Competition Announced
La Jolla, Calif. (January 31, 2007) - The La Jolla Symphony & Chorus (LJS&C) announces the winners of its 48th annual Young Artists Competition, held January 27 on the University of California, San Diego campus. The Competition is open to talented young musicians from, or studying with a music teacher in, San Diego County or Baja California. Six winners were selected for first-, second-, and third-place awards in both vocal and instrumental categories. Three most-promising awards were also awarded: two in instrumental, one in vocal. The nine winners were awarded prize money of $6750. First-place winners may be featured as paid soloists with the LJS&C in its 2007/2008 season contingent upon scheduling and season programming.
Judges for the instrumental division were Maxim H. Eshkenazy of San Marino, California, and Armando Pesquedira, a resident of San Ysidro, California, and Tijuana, Mexico. Vocal contestants were judged by Warren Hoffer and Mary Pendleton, both from Phoenix, Arizona. Contestants for the Young Artists Competition are encouraged to present innovative repertoire, including at least one selection composed after 1925, in keeping with the LJS&C's philosophy to present varied programming.
