The LJS&CA Music Outreach and Education program strives to enrich the lives of students and residents throughout San Diego by offering opportunities to learn music, perform on stage, interact with talented musicians and attend concert events.
In April of 2006, the LJS&C Music Outreach and Education program presented a very exciting music outreach opportunity for students in City Heights and surrounding communities: the creation of a City Heights Mariachi and an Afro-Cuban Ensemble. The program is the result of a successful partnership between La Jolla Symphony & Chorus, Mariachi Champaña Nevín, Ritmo Caribe, the City Heights Performance Annex and City Heights Park and Recreation. (See pictures, below.)
The Young Artists Competition and Tom Nee Commission are also vital elements in LJS&C Music Outreach and Education. The Young Artists Competition is one of the oldest competitions of its type in California. The Tom Nee Commission has premiered the work of ten young composers through their commissioned pieces.
